About Master Gary Steuer

Gary was born in New York City. After the Korean War, Gary's brother Joey, was sent to the Kodokan in Japan to learn Judo so he could teach it to soldiers for their self defense training. Gary began his martial arts journey at the age of 11 with Judo.  From 15 to 18 years old Gary trained in boxing with Rocky Marciano's trainer, Charlie Goldman, at Stillman's gym in Manhattan.

During his tour as a Marine from 1963 to 1967, he studied in Okinawa with Master Shimabuku and studied Iron Palm in Hong Kong with Master Raymond Wong and Master Lee.

In Vietnam Gary was assigned to the Republic of Korea Marines as security and rode with them all the way from Chu Lai to DaNang. He trained with them in a lethal martial arts style for which he never got the name of, due to the language barrier that existed.

After arriving back in the USA in 1967, Gary immediately moved to Los Angeles Chinatown to study with Grand Master Ark Yuey Wong in the Five Family, Five Animal Style of kung fu. In 1973, at the request of GM Wong, Gary began teaching at his new school in Santa Monica and eventually took it over. The school has been open with many of the same students ever since. Gary continued training with Grandmaster Wong until 1982. He later studied Tai Chi with Mary Chu at UCLA.

Gary is now retired and living in Thailand. He posts video on a YouTube page. He remains in contact with is students at the kung fu school. He has traveled occasionally to Los Angeles to continue to instruct his senior students and promote this great martial art. Gary can be contacted for on-line kung fu instruction, see the contact page for information.
